2014 Recruiting Thread (Updated 06.07.2013)

  • I'm not sure of his plans when it comes to visits. The distance factor might work in our advantage here. 247 has his top schools as Michigan, Miami, Ohio (su), Notre Dame, Stanford, and USC. Ohio (su) isn't really serious competitors academically. You can never be sure with a how a kid feels about ND. Stanford is an academic powerhouse, and USC is right in the heart of the entertainment industry. Hopefully he does prefer his medical aspirations to his musical ones and wants to stay closer to home! All this paired with his childhood affinity for the Maize and Blue make things look good for the staff! goblue

Awesome. Pepper would definitely be a tremendous get.

Looked around and I believe he'll travel with his friend Tyrone Washington. In Washington's Tremendous interview he said he'll visit this summer with Peppers, but no set date yet. There was a free article on Washington here and this was in it:

Washington hopes one particular program notices.

“I’m a big, big fan of Michigan,” he said. “I’ve spoken to them and I got invited to their camp.”

There have been examples of players not playing a down of football in college (Antonio Gates, Steve Neal) or trying out another sport first (Weinke, Weeden) but still leading very productive careers... I can't think of anybody who can say the same thing in regards to basketball. I think the chances of going to play basketball and not making it, there could still be a chance to crossover into football... if you dedicate your time to football, I don't see it likely to be able to make that switch over to basketball.

I think one of the main things being overlooked is the simple numbers... there just simply aren't as many basketball positions to go for as there are NFL... on top of that basketball players are competing for those spots w/ the entire world, when football players are limited to basically the U.S.

Although the difference with basketball is that it is an international game. If he is open to living abroad for a while, there are profession leagues in Europe and Asia that are growing each year.

You are absolutely right that the NFL offers far more opportunities numbers wise than the NBA. However, it might be more fair to weigh it as the NFL vs all the other basketball leagues. In that light, the opportunities are much closer.

Outside of that, there's a greater chance at a long career in basketball as opposed to the NFL, relatively speaking.

That being said, I'm rooting for him to play football, it's just so much more fun to watch!!!

Roh will be drafted next April in the first 3 or 4 rounds. Shitty player development from the last coaching staff held alot of guys back career wise. Honestly, it's really not even fair to judge kids like him , Campbell, etc... considering the "defensive staff " that they were playing under before Hoke and company came in. Alot of careers were pissed away and alot of talent went underdeveloped during those years. Thankfully, that has changed I look for both to have really good years.

I will be pleasently surprised if he is drafted in the first 4 rounds. Keep in mind Martin went in the 3rd round I believe this year, up to this point I wouldn't put the career of Roh anywhere near Martin.

Agree his career hasn't been nearly as accomplished but he does have great size for the position which martin lacked and the measurables are huge to NFL teams, doesn't mean he'll necesarily go in 3 or 4 but could help. Martin likely would have been a late 1st or early 2nd choice if he was roh's height

Think that that would have more to do with the lack of height. Tallest NFL players are usually what 6'8 max? And those are your extremely tall OT. Which would be undersized PF. Tallest skill guys are probably 6'5 which would be undersized SG. Gates was an undersized basketball player, not so with football. Has more to do with height than anything else.

There are former wrestlers that make the transition to offensive lineman too. The skills used in football are more natural & instinct, run, hit, throw, catch... the skills used in basketball are developed over constant repitition. I obviously don't mean for it to sound easy to just switch from another sport and go to the NFL, but it has been done w/ basketball players, wrestlers, and if you want to count soccer & rugby players as well. In the NBA, that would never happen w/ someone that hasn't devoted their life to basketball. Fewer positions, and more global competition.

Superb investigatory work....I looked around for my post regarding Tyrone, but to no avail.....I would really love that package deal with Ty and JP, and then let the dominoes fall

Thats fine, the NFL does not draft on just overall body of work over a "4 year college career" as you know it's part of the selection process, but there are alot of other factors as that go into drafting people and alot of his production was hampered by the fact that he was playing out of position(OLB in that f*cked up 3-3-5 defense for 2 out of his 4 years at Michigan) and under a sh*tty ass coaching staff who did nothing for his development as a defensive prospect(For 2 out of his 4 years at Michigan) in a perfect world he would have redshirted as a defensive end(His natural position) as a freshman instead of being tossed into the fire playing OLB and essentially wasting that year of eligibility just like Will Campbell did. With all that said, Roh is still currently rated by numerous draft outlets as one of the top 10 DE prospects for next years draft. If he plays like I expect him to this season then his stock will only rise. Roh will go in the first 4 rounds... if I knew you personally I would be willing to bet on it.

  • Nathaniel Devers, OG prospect from Masillion in Ohio has us as his number one school. He doesnt have an offer yet, because the coach's want to see his first few games as a junior. He expects to make a decision in the spring, but could be earlier if he gets an early offer from us while taking other early visits. From an interview he stated:

His thoughts and feelings on Michigan... "They are my number one school right now and I'd really like to get an early offer from them. They are a great program and a great school."

  • Heard you guys offered a MI OL last name Dollis, or something like that, not listed on OP's post. What's the story on him? UM guy for TOS said UM/ND battle with ND looking good. We haven't offered him yet. Info please?

Tommy Doles out of Grand Rapids Christian is who you're thinking of. He's the teammate of Drake Harris, who just committed to MSU tonight for basketball and football. Michigan has offered Doles and he did just camp at ND last week but came away without the offer. FWIW, Allen Trieu tweeted that he feels that if/when ND offers, they will be tough to beat. He also mentioned it wasn't just a hunch, but "inside info."

Someone (I think trieu) tweeted yesterday that doles was still at nd for a visit that started Monday.

  • I would assume our OL recruiting strategy for '14 is going to be soley offensive tackle? We've pulled a lot of G/T types past two years. I threw together a little spreadsheet and feel somewhat confident about these guys. We need another TE I think. All I could come up with was Van Dort who is growing into a OT in my opinion. The following arent necessarily in order of importance:

    Top Interested POS. MISC.
1 Malik McDowell DE 3/5 tech
    2 Damon Webb DB CB
    3 Corey Holmes WR speed
    4 DeShone Kizer QB dual
    5 Michael Ferns LB SAM?
6 Brandon Hines DT 3 tech?
    7 Gelen Robinson DE/LB Rush?
    8 Parrker Westphal DB S?
    9 Alex Bars OL OT
    10 JaMarco Jones OL OT?
    11 Dexter Wideman DT NT
    12 Nyles Morgan LB SAM?
    13 Jonathan Hillman RB
14 Jordan Van Dort TE OT?
    15 Dominique Booth WR speed
