I agree and we should take two.

I would love cornwell and possibly a kizer as a project.

If I had to put a percentage on it, I'd say 80% chance we only take 1 and 20% that we take 2. just based off things I've read...

I'd say maybe even more than 80%.

you know 75% of all statistics are made up on the spot, right?

I'd say maybe even more than 80%.

Borges has repeatedly said he likes to take one QB per class so I kind of estimate the chances we take one QB at around 98%.

I know it would be nice to have a second one in this class (or at least know that DG gets a redshirt), but it's not like the second guy will be all that helpful when we actually need him. 2012 was the year to take a second QB or not and I think that time has passed.

QB Depth (DG - Devin, RB - Bellomy, SM - Shane, DC - Cornwell (my guess), QB2 - 2nd QB if we take one)

2013 - DG, RB, SM: This is the year 3 QBs will hurt most. Hopefully Bellomy was injured vs. Nebraska and doesn't stink so Shane can RS.

2014 - DG, RB, SM, DC: Assuming DG gets a fifth year, which Hoke seems confident about, we have 4 QB.
    or
2014 - DG, RB, SM, DC, QB2: Same as above, except a 2nd QB to redshirt.
    or
2014 - SM, RB, DC, QB2: No DG 5th year, 2nd QB to redshirt, most ready freshman plays if SM and RB BOTH go down.

2015 - RB (possible 5th year), SM, DC, QB2, 2015 QB: Depending on Bellomy's usefulness in his 5th year and whether Shane got a RS or not, we could possibly have a RS Sophomore, 2 RS Freshman, and a true freshman that will be sitting behind those three or four.

I'm not arguing against taking a second QB, but I'd much rather just go for a top-5ish guy every year forward instead of trying to cram a second one into the class.

  • If DG gets his redshirt then one is okay. No redshirt and we need two imo.

I think Bellomy is the perfect argument for why you don't just take a QB to fill a QB spot on the roster.

While I agree with not taking a QB just for the sake of taking one, I don't really agree with the general sentiment about Bellamy.

First we are saying Gardner sucked because he had a bad spring game last year and didn't look great when he got 2 plays a series in 2011, then turns out he's pretty good when given 4 or 5 consecutive games to play and practice as the starter. Now we, as a fanbase, are lauding him as the next great Michigan QB for the next two years.

Then, at the same time, Bellomy has a decent spring game - to the point where the coaches make him QB #2 and the fanbase was pretty much in agreement. Then, as a RS Freshman, he gets in for his first non-garbage game action: 2 quarters against the team that eventually won our division at their place down by 3 or 6 or whatever points without a run game to help him. After the game, we find out from Hoke that Bellomy has an undisclosed injury and after the season we find out our backup for Gardner was Kennedy. So something was wrong with Bellomy, but now he is a terrible QB and can never be serviceable as our QB (all while most of us continue to joke "with our line and our RBs, we don't even need a guy that can throw that well").

It just seems like opinion of Bellomy went from "potential future starter/good backup" to "Nick Sheridan with a scholarship" in 2 quarters at a top-20 team during his RS freshman year with no run game (while potentially injured). While he might not ever be a great starter, I think him never being useful is way overblown. He was a fricken freshman QB and we're going to run a west coast offense - they don't all need arms like Shane.

Unless that injury was to his arm, bellomy shouldnt play again. Rewatch the nebraska game. It wasnt his bad decisions(which were bad), it was his noodle of an arm that couldnt get the ball to the sideline.
Hopefully he will have worked on strengthening pretty much everything between that game and this spring game. Because we may need him again soon at least in some capicity to be game ready.

Bellomy is rumored to have a shoulder injury.

I guess I'm saying I think it is probably his arm/shoulder/neck/back that was injured. It's tough to throw, even if you have something like a lower back or foot injury not related to your arm.

I just don't believe he got worse that much worse at throwing after being at Michigan for 2 years unless there was an injury. He looked like a capable division 1 QB on his recruiting film and in the relatively few plays I've seen of him in scrimmage. Bellomy was bad vs. Nerbraska, 1.2 QB rating bad, but I still think the general projection of "will always suck" based on his 2 quarter performance is overboard.

Anyway, sorry for the Bellomy tangent. For 2014, I'd be OK with 1 or 2 QBs but prefer just a good one like Cornwell or O'Connor.

  • Bellomy's injury was internal. He had problems with his kidney, or some other organ. I think it was the result of a hit he took either during the Nebraska game or the week of practice following. His arm will never be strong, but it could be good enough for a west-coast style offense so long as he's accurate. He just needs to grow some balls so he can perform on the road.

And throws the ball a few steps before the receiver makes his break.

He didnt look like a strong thrower in tje spring game , but not as bad as the nebraska game. So im willing to concede part of his noodleness was due to some undisclosed injury.
At michigan, im looking for the ryan mallet or henne type arm to make any throw in any situation regardless of what system we are running.
The way i see it, bellomy in a year can be a solid back up if we need to call upon him , and thats about it. Im ok with taking 2 qb's in 14' , we really need to land that one high rated big arm each year. But when one of those kids transfer for playing time and one goes down to injury, you dont have a ton of experience or depth there. So i think its important to add another guy on occation.

You should train him to have a massive right arm like you! 8^D

My high school qb had a right arm like yours...he threw the ball like a hellicopter...lucky thing I had such great hands...I could have been a star...could run like the wind too...of course I only weighed 135 lbs. Now I weigh 250 and run like a duck.

Is there anything specific that makes you say that, besides him moving to Florida?

Coach Brown did a write up, that when Borges went to visit IMG to see O'Connor throw for 30 minutes, that he didnt even talk to Ward. I remember reading that Borges didn't even talk to O'Connor either, but only observed him. I think this is due to NCAA rules with how the coaches can contact 2014 kids. Anyways, Ward was disgruntled about not even seeing/talking to Borges, but it may be a misinterpretation of the rules on Wards part. If anyone can confirm the lack of communication by Borges because of NCAA rules, and what that rule(s) may be thank you.
