2014 Recruiting Thread (Updated 03.20.2013)

He said that he grew up loving Michigan, and was gonna go there until he went to AA for a visit, and all of the people called him Tom. He was upset because his name wasn't Tom.

The real reason Gholston didn't end up at Michigan was because he had a special "advisor" who took him on all his visits, bringing him to MSU all the time, and shielding him from certain coaches and lying to him on his Michigan visits. That "advisor" soon became a MSU assistant coach after Gholston's recruitment.

That's not entirely accurate. Archie Collins was one of the assistants at Southeastern who was pro MSU. Gholston had his own dislike for Michigan, and preference for Sparty, and Collins just helped him along by always being with him on his visits.

Collins got a job as a video coordinator or something at MSU afterwards, but is not an assistant coach. He also helped push kids like Fred Smith and Jon Hankins to schools other than Michigan. (though Michigan refusing to offer Hankins until very late also helped that cause)

yea, sure that video coordinator job just came outa nowhere, sparty coaches just evaluated and deemed up some new talent with no regard to who he coached

  • Alan Branch's younger brother Desmond is a 2014 prospect, and he could blow up next year......If so and we offer we will be at the top of the list

Quick, fluid and powerful especially for a sophomore.

McDowell and Branch sounds really nice

I'd like to see this re-occur in 3-4 years. Yes please.

Ouch. One of my favorite Michigan pictures. Still makes me cringe thinking of that hit.

Yes, we'd all like this very much! Curious to see how much he'll grow from 6-3, 240ish. Also, wondering what Alan's size was as a sophomore?

Didn't Penn State lose two qbs in that game?

Yep started with Morelli, finished with the third stringer.

  • Branch and Woodley were very mean to QBs that year.. Hope to see a DL that is just as destructive this year... Nobody on this roster is at either of their levels yet but I could see BWC doing some damage if he keeps his pad level down... Hope to see McDowell wreck some QBs down the road for the Maize and Blue... He is still #1 on my list with Peppers in the 2014 class.

  • Looking at what the talent looks like and interest in Michigan, how do you think we'll do by position group?

2014 is loaded at DB so we should do great here.

Also there are some fantastic LBs in the midwest so that position should look great.

DE has some top talent as well in play for us.

NT still looks like a position that will be tougher to fill.

On offence I think we will do well at QB with a couple good options and there seems to be some good WR and TE talent.

I believe OL will be tougher this year because of the hauls we've had the last two years.

Finally, Great RBs prospects are not as available and unless we get one of our early targets it might be a long summer next year.

I'm typing this on my smart phone so sorry for not adding all the names.

In summary, I think the toughest positions to fill next year will be NT and RB.

I think we're going to get a great running back next year, regardless of what Green decides to do

I don't think the OL will be that big a problem. We should take 4 in 2014 and I expect 2 high 4 star/5star guys, a solid to low 4 star and maybe a high 3 star kid.

  • I think we'll do really well at RB. I like the group of players that our coaching staff has targeted thus far. I'm interested to see how they perform during their junior season.

On the other hand, I'm a bit concerned about NT. But Bryan Mone can erase that concern with a commitment.

Also depends on where Hurst ends up. He could easily end up at NT IMO.

I think QB, DB, LB, OL, and WR will be fairly easy to fill.

  • So far the 2014 class looks like it will be great, we need to lock up the big instate guys like McDowell and Damon Webb those guys are going to be big time players and we can't let them get out of state. Here is a list by position of some of the guys I think we are in good shape for.

QB: Deshone Kizer, Chance Stewart( It will be interesting to see who gets offered first)
RB: Jonathan Hillman, Jemeterious Crockham(no offer yet)
WR: Corey Holmes, Dominque Booth(if he gets an offer), Derek Kief (if he gets an offer UM/OSU battle)
TE: Darryl Long(if he gets an offer), Mark Andrews.
O line: Jamarco Jones, Alex Bars, Nathaniel Devers(if he gets an offer), Tommy Doles( I think he goes to ND if he gets an offer from them)
D line: McDowell, Mone, Connor Sheehy( if he gets an offer)
LB: Joe Henderson, Michael Ferns, Clifton Garrett(should get offered at the BBQ), Dante Booker( would be awesome to steal him from Urban)
DB: Damon Webb, Westphal, Peppers, Nick Watkins

The position I'm concerned about is OL we have offered a lot of supers don't know how good of a chance we have with them until they get on campus,RB besides Hillman I don't think we have offered any RB's, NT although Mone could play there I guess no other targets stand out at this time. I think one thing that we need to remember is that its still super early for 2014 and as time goes on more guys will pop up.
