Josh Helmholdt ‏@JoshHelmholdt Detroit Loyola 2014 DE Malik McDowell measured in at 6-6, 292. Been hitting the weight room hard #RivalsChallenge

I believe Sam Webb said yesterday MM still a Michigan lean, but he wants to check out other schools for awhile.

  • Can he even play end if he ends up over 3? Play first and second down on strong side and move to 3 tech on 3rd down. I like it!

Mario Edwards Jr. was the #1 player last year at DE and he was over 300, as long as he's athletic enough, he'll be fine at DE.

Agreed, and I definitely don't think that athleticism will be a problem.

Yeah, McDowell has the sort of frame where he can carry 300lbs remarkably well.

Well, I wouldn't quite go that far for next year. In many years I would agree, but Michigan is in great shape for Jabrill Peppers and IMO an elite CB can singlehandedly change the result of a game. They can shut down half a field in the passing game and allow the defense to blitz aggressively without having to worry about the big play.

He can probably play the SDE 5 tech spot, or the 3 tech, not much chance he ends up at WDE though.

I'd hope not, WDE is meant for players in the 260-270 area, such as Brandon Graham.

Bill Greene ‏@BillBankGreene Cass Tech CB Damon Webb is the best kid I've seen in OSU 2-day camp. GUARANTEED he gets offered.

Loving it. Let's keep up that streak of taking a CB from Cass Tech every year...

He is being heavily recruited ... tougher this year ... but achieveable.

Weight has little to do with playing weak or strong side.

Weak side is meant for the more athletic rushers that go one on one with the blocker on most plays, usually weigh less. Strong side is meant for the bigger guys who can set the edge and take on double teams, usually weigh more. Perfect example is Craig Roh having to gain more weight to be able to play SSDE.

Weight has everything to do with it. Why do u think the coaches want Roh to gain weight? Other example: Mario is a tweener OLB/WDE only because he needs to gain weight. Strong side In most cases weigh more then weak side

He has needed to gain weight in general. If player x weighs more than player y, that doesn't mean player x will play the strong side. It's more about athletic ability to stop the run on the tight end side vs contain and pass rush on the weakside. It's about the players attributes athletically not just the weight as the more athletic the player the more likely he will play the weakside. Look at the ny giants. Jason Pierre Paul is the most athletic by far but also weighs more than tuck or osi, and he plays the weakside.

Exactly, so perhaps its just semantics but playing the weakside is more about the athletic ability which may mean a player weighing less but just cause a player weighs less doesn't mean he is weakside. Roh played weakside last yr because he was the best option considering RVB playing strong and more athletic guys just being freshman.

Good example but u can't hide the facts, SDE almost always outweigh the weak side ends. In order to stop the run u gotta be able to stand your ground. In most cases being able to hold your ground means your carrying more weight.

The TE usually plays on the side of the SDE, correct? He has to deal with double teams.
