There are plenty of things for which to criticize Dave Brandon. Failing to open up the wallet isn't one of them.

Unfortunately the decision isn't entirely in his hands. Michigan's athletic department and the salaries of the people who work in it are always restricted by higher ups (both at the university and from outsiders) who want to avoid placing too much emphasis on sports. There are academia types who scowl at paying so much money to football coaches.

Sure but when you have a cash cow like Michigan does with their football team. Its time to pony up.

That's been going on since the beginning of time. My point is all you have to do is look at how much our current coaching staff is paid. We have two of the highest paid coordinators in the country and our staff is the second highest paid in the B10 (primarily because Urbie is paid more than Hoke and they have two DCs). There are very few programs in the country with higher paid assistant coaching staffs ... Bama, LSU, OSU, maybe Texas, Clemson and/or Georgia. I don't know if Coach Montgomery will stay or leave, but I highly doubt it will be because we refuse to match compensation with OU. If Hoke wants to keep him, Brandon is not going to prevent that by suddenly becoming cheap.

But everyone also needs to realize that there are reasons other than money why an assistant coach might choose to leave. Maybe he wants to add to his resume by working for a second elite program. Maybe he wants to expand his knowledge base by working for another top tier HC. Maybe he's being offered expanded responsibilites. Who knows what factors Coach Montgomery is weighing, but it's a huge leap in logic to assume that if he leaves it's because Michigan is being cheap. Dave Brandon has opened the checkbook from the moment he took over and this staff is one of the highest paid in the country. There is no reason to believe the Coach Montgomery situation is being approached any differently.

Please provide specifics. And these "higher ups" have approved some very attractive pay packages for the coaching staff up to this point. Why would they suddenly balk at a small amount of money to keep a top assistant coach?

Edit: Here's a link to a recent comparison of B10 assistant coaches salaries, and remember OSU has three coordinators ...

What he is referring to is that when Frank C started the original 2013 recruiting thread he asked to keep it non VIP to get as much discussion as possible. So most figure that would go for the 2014 thread as well.

Oh ok I can understand that, wanting more traffic, but the way I look at it is if someone is paying for a subscription then it is that persons right to VIP a post.

I dont think everything should be vip, but certainly people have the right to post things they feel should be vip. This is the top thread on this site, it will be popular no matter what.

shrug We don't have a free board so I don't think it's too much to ask to keep certain threads non VIP.

I hardly ever vip my posts, but I also think that people who dont pay shouldnt complain about the vip. I mean if you go to any of the other sites if you dont pay you cant do or see anything. Atleast here people can still be active and get info without paying.

Im sorry WIlly I am always on your side, but I have to disagree here. People who pay should be able to post whatever they wish as a vip. It is their right. Also Rivals doesnt have a free board. You cant even view articles or threads without a subscription.

I dont think Willy meant that you shouldnt VIP ever. I think it was brought up that the season threads should be kept 100% VIP free. You're right tho.. you have every right to make VIP posts.. just start a new thread.

I think the decision is primarily in his hands. The AD is pretty independent from the University, no one on the academic side is scoffing at the fact that Brady Hoke is one of the highest paid people at the university and I don't think they'd care if a position coach makes an extra 100,000
