2013 starting defense

  • Moon has one for offense, so I figured why not make one for defense as well?

    IMO:

    SDE: Beyer/Black/Wormley
    DT: Q Wash/Poggi/Hurst
    NT: Pipkins/Henry
    WDE: Clark/Ojemudia/Strobel
    SAM: Ryan
    MIKE: Morgan
    WILL: Ross
    BC: Countess
    FC: Taylor
    FS: Gordon/Wilson
    SS: Robinson/Thomas

I couldn't make up my mind on who starts at both of the safety positions, and I probably messed up the DL. Oh well. What you say?

  • Can't believe Robinson will start at safety...he has looked lost. I assume it will be Thomas and Wilson.

LB, wonder if Ross will see the field more?

Also, I have a gut feeling Wormley will see the field more, maybe in the interior.

Thomas could very well be the starter. Like I mentioned, I couldn't make up my mind on who starts at safety. Could be a number of different people.

Yeah, I think Ross will win the WILL job. And Morgan gets moved to MIKE. May not happen, but I think that LB corps would be awesome and I'd love to see it.

  • Lots of question marks here and possibilities. Could Thomas Gordon play SS? Will Dymonte or Taco do well enough in spring ball to contribute a lot? How is Blake Countess recovering from surgery? What position are the RS FR DL best at? Could Desmond Morgan play MIKE? Who's more along, Wormley or Strobel? Ross or Bolden? Robinson, Furman, or Wilson? Who's gonna win the crapshoot at WDE?

    My opinion:

SDE: Tom Strobel --- Keith Heitzmann
DT: Jibreel Black --- Chris Wormley
NT: Quinton Washington --- Ondre Pipkins
WDE: Brennan Beyer --- Frank Clark/Mario Ojemudia
SAM: Jake Ryan --- Cam Gordon
MIKE: Desmond Morgan --- Joe Bolden
WILL: James Ross III --- Royce Jenkins-Stone
CB: Blake Countess --- Terry Richardson
CB: Raymon Taylor --- Courtney Avery
SS: Thomas Gordon --- Dymonte Thomas
FS: Jarrod Wilson --- Marvin Robinson

I think you nailed it....but im not sure beyer starts. ojemudia really came on strong. not only could he rush the passer, but he was plenty strong against the run. that whole position will be a battle going forward. so much depth there its exciting. clark has all the ability, but lets see how much he presses the others

As usual, I really like your list. Only change I would make is flip Beyer with the other 2 at WDE.

  • I agree with both of you on Beyer. That was the biggest question for me. He's the best against the run right now IMO. If I could have a combination of Beyer's run defense and Clark's pass rush, that'd be perfect. So it really depends on the down. If Ojemudia can bulk up and get strong against the run, the spot's his. He looked great rushing the passer last year.

For the most part this looks realistic. Not sure Stroebel starts though, think they probably shuffle guys around to get more experience at sde, beyer or black. Probably have Black rotating between 3 and 5, kinda like rvb.

I don't see a RS freshman and a true freshman taking over for seniors with starting experience, Black and Gordon.

I see Morgan holding down the MLB position also.

Agreed about Black and Gordon. Pipkins will be in the rotation, but he won't supplant Black, and Thomas Gordon will be our starting SS absent some unprecedented improvement/showing by Dymonte Thomas.

With the amount of rotation that'll go on, I think it'll be practically an even time-share at MLB, and Morgan will probably take some plays from Ross at WLB.

Agreed with the LBers. There will be solid minutes for all 3 at WLB and MLB. Ross and Bolden look to be the superior athletes, but Morgan reminds me of Kovacs with his solid steady play.

  • SDE: Keith Heitzman -- Tom Strobel
DT: Jibreel Black -- Chris Wormley
NT: Quinton Washington -- Ondre Pipkins
WDE: Brennan Beyer -- Mario Ojemudia (F Clark as situational pass rusher only)

MIKE: Desmond Morgan -- Joe Bolden
WILL: James Ross -- Joe Bolden
SAM: Jake MF Ryan -- Cam Gordon

CB: Raymon Floyd -- Terry Richardson
CB: Blake Countess -- Delonte Hollowell
Nickel: Courtney Avery -- Jourdan Lewis

S: Thomas Gordon -- Marvin Robinson
S: Jarrod Wilson -- Dymonte Thomas

Biggest question marks are on the DL - can Black hold up at DT or will one of the RSFR win the job or be pressed into service. DE is an even bigger question, as the WDE merry-go-round continues to go round. At this point I've got Heitzman at SDE, he performed pretty well spotting Roh last year while none of the other candidates saw the field. Also, Matt Godin is my dark horse contributor at SDE/DT, I'm just not sure where he'll end up or how much of an impact he'll make this year.

  • WDE-- Ojemudia
    DT-- Black
    NT - QWash
    SDE -- Strobel
    WILL - Ross
    MIKE -- Bolden
    SAM-- Ryan
    CB -- Raymon
    CB -- Blake
    FS -- Wilson
    SS -- TGordon

Tons of bodies will be used... I would guess 10 guys on the DL along with Cam and Morgan at LB... Probably some Marvin in the secondary with Avery and TRich in on passing downs... Starting to see some depth show up... The DL will be a huge plus next year... I could see them allowing less than 75 rushing yards per... Getting a pass rush will be much more difficult

    jnewberg24

  • I think Beyer starts over Frank Clark/Mario Ojemudia for one reason: he has been more consistent. If the other guys ever get that consistency, their talent will drive them to be starters.

  • I'd hope a guy like Pipkins can live up to his ranking by the start of next year.

    uguumaster

  • We better hope Ojemudia is on the field because he is probably the only pure pass rusher on this team and it is the most glaring hole along with safeties covering anything ... If he doesn't get injured mid-year, he would be a lock to start... Makes plays... Beyer needs to bulk up a little and move him around a little

I agree - I think there's a good chance that we see a line of Ojemudia - QWash - Black - Beyer this year.

I have to agree with everyone on beyer still. We may see a rotation on downs and packages again. However, i remember a play when ojemudia cleared the olune and just blew up a rb with a head of steam and i thought wow, playing d tackle in highschool really helped him. If thjs kid adds any size and strength, he is going to be a monster.

I hope someone remember that clip and knkws where to find it

  • Why is everyone ripping my projections down? I started this whole thing to see who y'all wanting starting regardless of experience or talent.

roflmao People are just completely misunderstanding that your posts weren't actual projections, they were preferential.

Hope you don't take it personally, my posts were all made while keeping in mind that I wasn't really responding to your post, but to the morphed (more realistic) projections that the rest of the comments adopted.

Don't worry Moon I'm with you on the Dymonte train. I can't stand Thomas Gordon. If Gordon starts I'll be a nervous Nelly the whole time he's in there til Thomas surplants him at his spot. Gordon reminds me of Woolfolk and that's saying something

I think if Dymonte picks up the scheme quickly....there is no reason he can't be starting half way thru.
