2013 long-snapper commits to Michigan

  • inuyesta said...

TomVH confirmed that he is committed and that it's a real, normal athletic scholarship.

    Wow.

I guess I have no choice but to have faith in the coaches, but this just seems like something that could've waited until the night before NSD a la Dennis Norfleet. It's going to make me sick to have to turn away an elite prospect somewhere else because of this.

  • Any chance the coaches have locked up some of the other commits they want and are waiting on them to announce? Because I am flat out confused on this one. I still want to welcome him to Michigan. Because we know dam well if Michigan offered us to be a water boy we would take it.

Any chance he can play nose tackle? I read he is pretty strong?

Exactly. Even if the coaches know that we're going to have higher attrition than previously thought and can "afford" to take 25 or 26 in this class, why wouldn't we try to use that extra schollie to try and take another of the elite guys we're in on? Like, we've spent the whole time since Poggi dropped speculating about whether we would go for a 4th WR or two DBs or a SDE...if attrition is really gonna be higher than previously reported, we wouldn't have to make choices about that...until we randomly decided to ink a long-snapper and now we've put ourselves in a bind that wasn't previously there.

I think this is a major blunder, no two ways about it.

We got one in the 2012 recruiting cycle to walk on.

Thus this makes no sense to me

    No we didn't

Especially with all the hype about this recruiting class. USC is using its limited scholarships perfectly, turning offers into an elite club and forcing all of the best players to secure their spots to ensure not being left out. Michigan has a rare opportunity here to capitalize on having the #1 class in the country - with only 4 spots left, recruits know that they've got a limited window to get in on this amazing class.

Now that we've let a LS take one of those spots, what does it say to Kendall Fuller, Leon McQuay, and all the others? Treadwell may have a guaranteed spot, but did we seriously just kiss our chance at a 4th CB/3rd RB goodbye for a LS? I get that he's supposed to be so good he'll anchor the position for the next 4 years, but this isn't a situation where we're choosing between a LS and a much lower-ranked filler player at the end of a class. This is still early and we're still in on so much elite talent!

    Sorry for the rant.

I'll go with it and put my faith in the coaches, but I really, really, really don't like this move. I think, in one fell swoop, this took a lot of the air and excitement out of the hunt for filling up these spots. This really could be the greatest recruiting class Michigan has ever had, and I think we blunted a lot of the momentum around the class with this move.

It's very possible that the coaches know about more attrition to get us up to 25 and that they want one WR, one DE, one DB, and one WR or RB so they knew that they had a spot open besides the four spots they want

  • I don't mean to toot my own horn but there's a reason I didn't partake in the Final 4 commits prediction thread. It's because I've been around recruiting long enough to know that there are surprise commits out of left field...like this one.

I just read the following and I'm fine with the commit.

Sypniewski is a man on a mission. Body is looking thick and muscular. He is moving well and snapping rockets. Attitude on this kid is amazing. Tell him to do something and consider it done. He has a good time but is full of rage when he is snapping. Love it. Ball is smooth, on target and crisp. He gets set and BOOM! the ball is in your hands. Very impressed with him and he is a no brainer scholarship kid!

Sypniewski is just flat out fantastic! Ball is like a missle yet very easy to catch. Movement is flawless and he is snapping with ease. Looks like he is not even trying but, before you blink, the ball is right on your hip. Accuracy, consistency and speed are all excellent. A tad lighter on his feet could bump him up and I am being picky. Sypniewski is terrific and is snapping with a TON of confidence. I am fully expecting him to stick his chest out and dominate in Vegas. 4/12

Sypniewski came into Vegas with a fire and a drive that you don't see often. He was like a man possessed...in a good way. Kid was a juggernaut all weekend. More and more my assistants would come up to me and ask if I had seen Sypniewski, they didn't have to, I had and could see just how dominant he was. Snapping VERY hard and controlled all weekend. Always had perfect form, but failed to snap his potential in the past....in the past! Syp was snapping as hard and accurate as anyone out there. He is ready right now. 1/12

Continues to impress me with his flawless form and excellent attitude. Body is thick and he moves well. Very personable and easily coacheable. Once his eyes get all the way through each and every snap, and he snaps as hard as he wants...he will be exceptional and a five star. Great person. Very close to being ready to be offered. 10/11

Excellent improvement by Sypniewski! He was already great in my eyes and now he is oozing confidence so he will just get better. Came out the IL camp this summer and was flat out dominant all day. Ended up winning the camp over Scott Daly in a heated battle. He was very poised throughout the whole process. Form is exceptional, blocking is solid and he is athletic. Great person. 7/11

Sypniewski is an easy one. He snaps the ball hard and he is flat out TREMENDOUS. He can dip into low .7s with his speed WHEN he snaps the ball hard. Form is literally perfect and he needs to take advantage of that and his great frame. Excellent human being that is almost ready for college now. TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp will be huge for him. Continuing on the path to greatness. Sypniewski is growing with his body and snapping. This Long Snapper is just flat out great.....ALREADY! Very, very smooth and accurate. Needs a tad more pop to really pick up his speed (which is already excellent for his age). Great snapper and person.

I didn't list mine either because I thought we'd have a surprise out of camp like Jeremy Clark.

Still feel like the timing is weird but made my peace. I don't care who fills the last few spots as long as we get Treadwell. Here's hoping that we never have to hear Sypniewski when he's wearing the winged helmet (unless he wants to catch a pass or two.)

  • I just searched for Scott Sypniewski on youtube and there are a lot of videos of him.

  • Out of (genuine, not trying to be snarky) curiosity, can anyone quantify the impact of an elite longsnapper? Like, if you have two teams that are identical in every way except one has an elite longsnapper and the other is just using a backup C or TE or something who trains on special teams, how much better will the elite longsnapping team be...i.e. is the longsnapper worth an extra 5 yards of field position on punts? An extra 10% on FG%?

  • If Hoke knew that we were going to offer a long snapper, why not do it back in February when numbers were'nt crunched?

A consistent LS will make it so that you never hear his name. There will be fewer blocked punts and kicks and less fumbled snaps.

I have to assume this is the case, because I find it very, very odd to handcuff ourselves like this otherwise. Nothing that Hoke has done up to this point makes me think he would do something rash, so I have to imagine that there's something the coaches know that we don't that mitigates a LS taking up a scholarship spot.

Unfortunately, even the best LS can't prevent this:

  • Schools aren't allowed to offer kids academic scholarships and then stick them on the team. It is a NCAA rule. Also, why question the coaching staff when they know more about attrition than we do? I understand that there is confusion and frustration because of the caliber of the recruits the coaches are going after, but we should all remember that they are the ones that are coaching.
Also, I think Hoke and company have earned some leeway on this one with the current recruiting class they have intact for 2013.

right, I understand that, but how much will the consistent LS cut down on those things? Like, if the probability of a blocked kick is .01 with your average LS, does the elite LS chop that down to .008? .006? More? Less? etc.

I dunno, but a bad one can cost you the game.

This is how I rationalized it...

Lord knows I don't ever want to see a bad snap on a game tying field goal or a punt deep in our own end zone cost us points. We've been very fortunate in this regard lately.

If for the 4 years that he's on campus he doesn't make a bad snap in a game, it was a scholarship handed out that I can live with.
