Obviously it could mean 100 things, just something to discuss. This is a message board.

  • I've been reading a lot of position arguments about who's gonna be a will or mike linebacker. And my understanding from reading quotes from mattison and hoke is that the will and mike positions are not significantly different. I vividly remember reading Hoke say "one linebacker is closer to tight end, that's about it". It may be pointless to speculate which one 17 year old HS juniors are gonna play in a couple years. But that's what message boards are for I guess. Game on. Also, if Gibbs can bulk up to 300lbs does anybody see him as being a project NT for UM? I mean NTs don't grow on trees and he's a local kid who would probably comitt on the spot if offered. There is a lot of time left to get in on a NT but it's just a thought. We are in on a lot of 3/5 techniques like Lacouture, Poggi, Teller and Augusta so the only way I see Gibbs getting an offer is if we strike out on those guys or he gains weight for NT.

Good to see. I didn't think much of it, but you never know. Seems like most our recruits are solid commits.

I would love to see him, LTT, Taco, and David Dawson all get in early. We already saw in the spring game how Jarrod Wilson was benefiting from EE, and I think there's no question that Dymonte can come in and have just as much of an impact. As for the other 3, all of 'em need to just hit a college weight room as soon as possible - the sooner we get them in, the sooner they see the field.

This was my thinking just a while ago. But what Hoke said about EEs, about missing out on the senior experience, got me to think again. Sure, the advantages of enrolling early are tangible and there to see. You get to fasttrack a kid considerably, with football schemes and experience as well as S&C.

But I can also see two drawbacks. One is the HS senior experience Hoke mentioned. This is only my opinion, but that period can add some perspective to your life, and who knows? It may help you get through a tougher time in college. Another is, what if a kid EEs, and redshirts anyway? Redshirting doesn't necessarily mean that EEing was for naught, far from it, but the kid might feel differently. He could second guess his decision to EE and think he'd have been better off enjoying his senior year in HS if he knew he'd redshirt anyway, and that could have a negative effect.

That's a good point, and I could definitely see LTT and some other guys getting redshirted.

“I think our linebackers have improved. I don’t look at the WILL and the MIKE being anything different. I think they’re all linebackers in there. The WILL and the MIKE are really the same position, it’s just one’s closer to the tight end and one’s not. That was the position that I wanted to see a lot of improvement, and I think we have taken steps. Not as much as you want yet, but I think there has been -- they’ve all worked. They’ve all tried. That’s the one thing I like about this defense, and I’m not saying last year’s wasn’t that way because they obviously were, but they come out every day wanting to get better. They really have energy and they really have tried to do it. It hasn’t been perfect at all, but you feel good when you walk off the practice field and say, ‘These guys worked hard today. These guys flew around today.’ I think that’s been kind of everybody.”

Greg Mattison file Have you been able to address some of the problems in the secondary that you mentioned at the last press conference? “Yeah. And again, anything that we saw based on last year we wanted to address.
