2013 Recruiting Hotlist

I didn't say 2013...I said 2012. In the year '13 those frosh will be sophomores and will have some experience. If you take a 3rd TE this year he won't magically be a senior next year. You will have to play with some inexperience no matter how you slice it. Plus if you keep taking TE's you're goin to have this problem again 4 yrs from now cause they'll all be leaving at the same time. You build depth by taking a couple every year or 2. Not all at once. #CrisCarter C'mon Man. It can wait...we have bigger depth issues other places. If y'all don't see this let me know.

That's pretty much my take on the matter too. Also, there's not that much talent at TE nationally so, if you're taking three, you can't really be selective at all.

Moore is a senior, he wont be around in 2013. Elite tight end in 2014 is nice, but again... If you are depending on freshman to be key contributors, you are in trouble...

Agree. And it seems silly to keep arguing about it. The coaches tried to pull another top TE late in the 2012 class but just couldn't get one they wanted. And they are actively continuing to pursue TEs for this class, so it seems likely that we will get one more.

    @Moon:

From what I've been told, Borges really likes the 2 TE offense and will implement it in his Gulf Coast Offense. Athletic TEs create mismatches that are hard to match-up with for defenses. Hence, it's not just spread teams that are using using 2 TE sets.

However, the coaches want to maintain speedy deep threats. That's why the coaches want 3 wideouts in this class.

In essence, imagine if Barkley had Stanford's TEs to complement his stud WRs (Woods/Lee). Put another way, imagine if Luck would have had USC's stud WRs to complement his TEs (Fleener/Ertz).

It theory, it's an awesome hybrid of both sides. Remains to be seen if the coaches can pull it off.

    Totally agree with you Frankie.

Well we are just gonna have to agree to disagree. Coaching staff tried to take another TE last year and I bet they take another this year. And if UM took JUCOs, Id bet theyd take some tight ends there too. Your logic on building depth at a position would hold true if we had ample tightends from the RR era. Since we really dont, thats why I feel the way I do about the postion. Some wont pan out, some may change position. Time will tell.

but you said it yourself, relying on freshmen is not a good idea. Anybody we get is going to be a freshmen and won't necessarily contribute more then the guys we already have. What they needed was another TE two years ago. Yes the coaches are still recruiting TEs but that doesn't necessarily mean we get another one.

Correct. I did say "You dont want to count on a freshman..." and thats why I also said "...but at least a 260lb freshman would have more physical capability to do so."

I don't think we are even recruiting any 260 lb TEs so ...

  • fwiw- there is a post by an admin on BuckeyePlanet saying he is hearing Gedeon will be visiting Stanford over Easter break. Take it for what its worth- no idea if he has real info or not, but generally that site is pretty good.

I doubt that. Worst case scenario, he realizes he has time and that he has a spot at UM.

I think there may have been some truth to the rumor that we take McCray or Gedeon, not both. WIth spots getting tight 3 LBs might not be an option. Especially if they want 2 more WRs, one more TE(I don't want one more TE but it appears the coaches do), one more RB, one more CB, add in the LB and that already puts us at 20 which is projected the lower limit to how many we take. Add in two DL, all of a sudden 3 LBs is a luxury.

  • Maybe the coaches know something we don't... For example, what if they were confident in getting Isaac and Smith? Would that make them hesitate with their current LB plans?

disagree. You add two RBs and you fill a spot. At this point I think OL an LBs are the strongest position over the last two years (assuming we take 2 LBs), which is why we are telling LBs and OL we are full.

Yep, he says he's verbally committing tomorrow. Doesn't get much clearer than that.

We already have a RB committed in Wyatt Shallman. No matter what you say the coaches already told him he is going to be a RB so that is what he is going to be.

Shallman will enter college as a RB, but if he is already around 250-260 as a Junior, it will be unlikely he sticks at RB his entire career. Name a 270+ pound RB besides Brandon Jacobs or Duckett, and those guys were a lot faster and agile than Shallman at this stage

    Syrio Forel

  • It all depends on how much weight Shallman puts on the first year or so in the program
