  • ^ I agree. I liked what saw in Channing Stribling's highlights.

I think Paul Harris is a nice prospect but I was not convinced by his tape.

  • Johnell Barnes is a prospect that no one here has probably heard of but has recently turned heads. He's from South Florida.

    From ESPN's free write-up on a 7-on-7 tournament:

"Dunbar wide receiver Johnell Barnes was electric in the semifinals and championship game and nearly unstoppable in one-on-one coverage. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound junior committed to Duke earlier in the week and visited with the South Florida coaches for a few minutes after the game."

    And from Rivals:

"JOHNELL BARNES, WR, FORT MYERS (FLA.) DUNBAR: Barnes, a recent Duke commitment, was a major reason why his team played for the championship at the event. He is an explosive slot receiver who is very quick off the line, creates great separation out of his cuts and does an excellent job of catching the ball cleanly with his hands. Even in a two-hand touch setting, he was very elusive after the catch."

I mentioned Barnes because he was mentioned along with Alvin Bailey who is set to visit us soon. Here's what Rivals had to say about Bailey who attended the same tournament:

ALVIN BAILEY, WR, SEFFNER (FLA.) ARMWOOD: Bailey did work on both sides of the ball for Armwood, making a number of plays on defense. He also showed the athleticism that makes him such a valued slot receiver option. Bailey is extremely quick and handles change of direction very well. He also excels at using his top-end speed to stretch the field and has the ability to go up and snag balls in the air.

And then there's also this about Leon McQuay III:

LEON MCQUAY III, S, SEFFNER (FLA.) ARMWOOD: McQuay lived up to his Rivals100 billing with yet another strong performance. He has the athleticism to be a cornerback, but will excel as a safety at the next level. McQuay does a good job of positioning himself before the snap and moving laterally to set himself up to break on the ball. When a quarterback makes his decision, McQuay reads the play very well and breaks on the ball. He is a ballhawk when it is put into the air.

    Carrington to Oregon.

A bit disappointing that he didn't give us a chance but he was expected to pick Oregon. He mentioned Oregon as one of his two dream schools with the other being Miami.

I loved his combination of size/ability/potential. Still, I'll still follow his career at Oregon.

Yup, I felt the same way about WR Devin Lucien a few years back. Still following his career at UCLA.

WRs slimming down here towards the end. I am liking Bailey, but after that one ....

I'd prefer we wait on McQuay (and Fuller).

I don't think this kid is who was bluegr was referencing, but I could be mistaken.

+1 .... giving a full scholly here tells me our chances are low with McQuay and/or Fuller.

    L. Treadwell
    A. Bailey
    P. Harris
    ------------
    D. Allen
    S. LaRue
    D. Stringfellow
    --------------
    R. Foster
    J. Quick
    M. North
    S. Christy

are the only WR left who have offers and have not committed. 1st group is guys that have us in their top group. Middle group not sure, but look like long shots. Bottom group is pretty much 0 chance.

I think Fuller likes us but ultimately heads elsewhere. I think we have a legit shot at McQuay and could ultimately land him, if we are willing to wait a bit longer. I'll trust the coaches, but I'm not sold on this offer - appears to be a tweener CB/S.

Thoughts on his film? His potential commitment?

His film is awesome IMO, lacks top end speed but moves around very well and is very fluid with his moves. He has a ton of potential and a great frame to build a lot of lean muscle on. If I had to compare his game to someone it would probably be Gareon Conley, both are tall, fast, fluid players that are playmakers when they get the ball.

As for the commitment, I'm not sure he will commit tomorrow, but if not it will be in a week or so. I like the offer, so I don't disagree with it and it seems like there will be around 3 spots after he commits.

  • I don't really like the offer. I didn't really see enough film that he's a better player than McQuay but that's just me.

So we will have a class of 25?

Different opinions I guess, I thought it was solid film and he clearly has potential, but it is no where near awesome. I also question how much weight he can add, while he is a long-strider, he doesn't have great speed, adding 20-ish pounds or more could slow him more. Not sure he is physical enough to play S.

Because he isn't anywhere near the player that McQuay is. McQuay is elite, this kid has solid film and good potential. Not a bad player by any means, just nowhere near McQuay.

Yeah and if the coaches really want him couldn't they wait until Novemeber if McQuay decides to go elsewhere?

I believe if he commits here, we are not "in" on the elite guys we think. This would tell me Muhammad, Fuller, McQuay, and Mathis are probably longer shots than thought. This commit gives us 22, with 2 left. If one is held for Treadwell supposedly, you have at most 1 left. Michigan is still pursuing Green hard, which leads me to believe the last spots after this are on offense.

    Yeah, that's my only "issue."

I could see if they were similar players, talent wise or if one wasn't deciding until NSD, but McQuay is easily the better prospect and wants to decide in NOV, which is still fairly early.

unless they all told the coaches that they are not going to commit here. We are still in Mathis, McQuay, and Fuller's top 3.

Fine ....but I see no need to take a commitment from an unknown prospect, unless the coaches do not think we have a shot at these three. Or, the coaches do not want to wait, which would baffle me.

He isn't a burner, but has good game speed. He could get up to 180 and keep that speed and be a more physical corner.

McQuay is also a top 50 nationally type kid, of course you aren't going to see anything better. If McQuay visits next week with Bailey, then we should get an accurate gauge of his interest in Michigan.
