I think you can add the interior OL and CB to that list. While I'm kind of expecting the OL play to get better next year, that's mostly because of just how terrible it was at many times last year. I think when you can't pound it against Air Force, then you're in for a long year. Even if we had Green last year, I don't think the run game would have been a whole bunch better. It's tough to run effectively when you're beating pulling linement to the hole or dodging countless opponents in the backfield. However, plugging a bunch of first time starting underclassmen into the interior also doesn't scream "effective run-game" to me either. I'm not expecting greatness, but I'm certainly hoping for it.

As for the CB, who starts opposite Taylor? The obvious answer is Countess, but who knows how he'll be post injury? It's mostly hoping for the best at this point. We still have Richardson, and he can probably be good if he's added the weight. Avery has shown he's not really cut out for the outside CB position. Plus Taylor, while looking good, is also not an elite CB either. He's gotten burned a few times, but was just picked on less than Floyd. Look at S. Carolina, and their receivers are no worse that what we'll face against ND or OSU.

While I think we'll be better than last year and, hopefully, finish better, there are still plenty of question marks in the way of us being B1G champions at this point.

Yeah and while ive heard good things about braden, is he going going to be able to pull effectively if he wins the job?
I do expect countess to come back full go. But certainly taylor isnt elite and they are both smallish corners. I wouldnt mind seeing richardson start this year in the slot. Even if he isnt a whole lot bigger he wont need to be covering the slot. Everything we ever beard was he was like glue and we need that.

Hmm I don't know about you guys but in my NCAA '13 several players had amazing offseasons, which led to a tremendous football season. I don't remember the exact stats but Derrick Green won the Doak Walker, Devin Gardner was 2nd in the Heisman, Taco had 14 sacks, Pipkins was unstoppable, and Dymonte broke Braxton Miller's leg. Shane Morris also got to play all of the 4th quarter against MSU.

    2nd?

This would be ideal for pash rushing situations

Yes, athletically and specimen wise, This would be the most "exciting" explosive look at DE. I understand why people would want it to be this way. Personally if everything aligned right and these guys played to their true potential this is how I would want it too. I have a good feeling about Mario, and would like to see Clark make a big leap this year.

Thing about Mario is this. I had that same good feeling about Clark when he was in his position two years ago. I think a lot of people did. I was personally expecting pretty good things from Clark last year. That never really happened. Could Mario be last years Clark?

Remember S. Carolina's 'Rabbit' pass rush formation? I would like this.

  • Alright guys, somebody lay out the interior Oline projected starters at this juncture. Also include the guys who will be battling for these three positions.

Yes I do. The great thing about having Mattison as a D Cordinator, along with our Dline depth means that we will get to see something along these lines as well next year. On one side of the coin I really want a guy or two to really emerge as a true stud along our dline, while on the other side of the coin it's exciting how many solid players we have in the front four who bring different plus attributes to their game.

In my NCAA '13, Gardner went pro after the 2012 season, despite having never started a game.

  • Frank Clark was and still is a pretty raw prospect, especially coming out of Cleveland Glenville. Mario is way ahead of him(if you compare them at the same stage) in hand usage, fundamentals/technique and leverage IMO. Those are some important traits for a successful DE, especially for an undersized DE like Mario

  • A couple points:

    1. Are we 100% sure Taco will play this year and not redshirt? Seems like our depth from the previous two DE classes should allow that.

    2. Jehu or Amara MUST step up on the outside.

    3. Intrigued to see how Kalis does.

The interior line play wasn't all American, but it wasn't abysmal in my eyes. Denard is a special talent yes but you still need holes to run through. He got holes both at QB and at RB during the bowl game. That tells me that you get a special talent back there, the run game will be successful. Kalis is an upgrade in my eyes, the two guys replacing Barnum and Eliot M can't do any worse, and are likely upgrades too. Then you bring in a guy like green and we may have a productive run game. All of this remains to be seen but I'm not as concerned because I saw denard run through holes.

CB you are right that we have ? marks. But that goes to my point about d line. We get pressure on the cb, the corners don't have to carry as much on their shoulders

Picture of Pipkins if anyone is interested. Has definitely shedded most of the bad weight from the Army Game when he was close to 350. Down to 312 currently. He is going to be a beast...

Yes he will be. The most important thing about Pippy's game outside of his athletic ability is he has the want and the hustle. Rarely do guys that hustle as hard as he does with his tools fail to be something.

Our dline classes were mostly on the strong side, Mario was the only weak side from the '12 class; and taco the only one from '13. our depth at weak side isn't as great as it appears. Clark and beyer is playing weakside now, You need length and athleticism at the weak side and im not convinced beyer is that but taco fits that. He has the physical size to play now, question is he strong enough.

I'm up to 266 like I really might be around 275 by football season

Now weight doesn't always mean strength, but I think we could make a safe assumption that he is getting stronger with those kind of weight gains.

OG: Kyle Kalis --- the only one that's pretty close to a lock

C: Jack Miller/Blake Bars/Patrick Kugler --- technique-wise, Kugler is probably the most sound, but he won't arrive until fall and will probably RS. That makes it between Miller and Bars IMO, with walk-on Joey Burzynski possibly battling it out as well. I think Bars has a good chance to win it.

OG: Chris Bryant/Ben Braden/Erik Magnuson/Kyle Bosch --- Bryant has the age and the size, but his injury could still be a problem. Braden and Magnuson are both better suited for OT, but might be our fifth best OL and we would want to get them on the field. Bosch is the wildcard. He already is college-sized, and the reports from his EE have been extremely positive. Chances are that he makes the two deep at the very least, and could contend for a starting job sooner rather than later. My bet is on Bryant if his injury is no issue and Braden otherwise.

Also, this is assuming that Mike Schofield stays at RT. He could slide back inside if the coaches want Braden as RT, in which case Kalis and Schofield would be our OGs.

  • Whoever is the best run blocker out of our OG's should be put next to Lewan that way we at least have a fighting chance to run downhill on one side of the line. IMO, I think Kalis steps up big this year and shows everyone why he was so highly rated. I really want Kugler to win the Center spot but don't know if it'll happen, I just want him to become Molkish.

Yup, which is where Michigan needs to improve most defensively. It's been a weak spot for quite some time now.

I forget where I saw it, but I'm pretty sure the coaches have said that they aren't going to shuffle Schofield around anymore. He got comfortable at RT last year and they want to leave him there. Makes sense, since we've got plenty of other interior options, and if they're comfortable with Braden playing RG, might as well get our future RT some work.

EDIT: Personally, I'm a fan of this mindset. Keep the senior bookend tackles, let the young guys get work in the interior.

EDIT 2: Just remembered, I talked to Schofield's brother on reddit, and he told me it's highly unlikely Mike gets shifted around again this year.

Taco will be a monster. It took Clark 3 years to get up to that weight, and Taco will be coming in that big and strong as a freshman. Love it.
