S. Gordon S. Wilson
CB Taylor CB Countess
OLB Ross MLB Morgan OLB Ryan
DE Clark DT Pipkens DT Washington DE Beyer
My guess at the starting 11 if games started tomorrow. Battles across the board at pretty much every single position except CB. Should make spring practices very interesting to follow. This team has a ton of options and could go so many different ways, especially in the front 7.

I think Pipkins step to the forefront like Hankins did in his second year... I think Pipkins has the same natural ability as Hankins and that could be a huge boost for this defense... Need a guy that can command a double and/or make teams pay for trying to block him one on one... Looking for a big year from him and hope all 3 frosh DL can RS... I really want to see who steps up at the SDE spot... Strobel and Clark are my 2 guesses... I think Mario locks up the WDE spot because his first step is so much better than any other player on this team.

I am with you on the Mario O bandwagon. I think he will start at WDE and be a terror this year. Some people are just unnaturally strong for their size and I think Mario fits into that category so I don't think being undersized will be a big deal for him. On first down I would be shocked if Pipkins and Washington weren't the DTs. Black, Strobel and hopefully Wormley will compete for the SDE spot. I like Wormley more on the outside than i do at 3 spot. On passing downs i wouldn't be suprised to see something like Clark and Mario on the edges with Black and Henry, Wormley or Pipkins in the middle.

While ross was highly instinctive and has the look of a great lb, he was not anywhere near strong enough at the point of attack. I hope he and wilson have added the strength to play this year.
I still have nightmares of wilson getting run over.
We should have a pretty athletic secondary, but good lord I think they will be small. Both vorners are tiny and while wilson has the prototypical frame for fs, he sure was physically ready last year.

That's what off seasons are for, to gain that strength. Wilson got trucked, this happens. Players get "mossed" on a go route and can be trucked. It happens in the pros, why shouldn't it happen in college. On top of the fact there were true freshman. How many true freshman come in day 1 with a body to play sad try or LB? they were on the field because of their ability and because they surpassed the other options on the team. I said all of that to say I'm not worried, in fact I'm encouraged

No im with you. What im not sure of, is if they can get it all from year one to year two. Although this tends to be the year players make the biggest jump, im wondering if they have added the necessary size to not just be effective, but can they take it up another notch.
I mean, of course that was going to happen last year. But this is stemming from people in the 14' thread thinking we are going undefeated, and right nkw we dont knkw how big of a jump these players are going to make. -

I'm most interested in seeing how Darboh and Chesson have developed. We absolutely need one of them to step up. Gallon is going to have his best year yet, IMHO, but we shouldn't have a 5'8 WR being our deepthreat as you seen last year. We all heard good things about Darboh in the bowl practices last season. He needs to step up, and replace Roundtree's spot. He has the size and strength, so it will be very interesting how he competes.
Also, I'm hoping we really include Funchess more into the catching scheme. I know he needs to work on his blocking, but I would like him to be more involved in passing plays as we move to a more pro-style offense. He has great talent.
These two will be very important keys to how our passing game develops.

Do you think Clark's frame can handle the additional bulk? He would need to be like 280-290 to really handle the 5-tech. Plus isn't his main problem standing up to the run, and playing good assignment football? I was hoping he would get the game mentally, and keep that athleticism to the WDE

Well, regarding the notion of going undefeated I'm with you. But I also don't think those folks in the 14' thread are that off the hinge. Green is a a freshman but he looks like he can be that guy to be reliable in the run game, similar to what lattimore was his freshman yr.
THe only other question marks are WR and DL in my eyes. The secondary was exposed last yr because the QB either had time to throw on a 4 man rush or we had to blitz thus going man and getting exposed. We need the DL to get pressure with 4/5 guys and I'm optimistic the redshirt fresh can provide thy boost along with our current guys. Then we just need ball catchers at wr and this team can be formidable.
That is still a lot of unknowns but certainly not wishing on a star so the optimism is understandable.
