2013 Offseason Thread - Michigan Football

  • Had a couple users rightfully request a pinned thread for discussion of the team's off-season in regards to player development, rumors, etc. This will be pinned for a while.

  • I wonder what the gap analysis is between where the coaches feel the players should be, and what the players actually are. This is the third year for the system and hoke has been coaching here going on 3 years.

  • Good thread. I'd like to talk about the interior defensive line.

Nose tackle looks like Q backed up by Peewee. Lots of rotation anyway on Mattison's line.

3-tech looks like what? Black? Henry? Wormley? Does Poggi get PT?

  • Really interested to see which backs show something in spring ball, particularly Drake Johnson since coaches seemed to be really talking him up during bowl practices. I wonder if one of them emerges to keep Derrick Green as the next back in next season (not taking into account the fact that Fitz could be 100%)

I've been wondering this as well. As you say, then NT seems good to go with Washington, Pipkins, and we also have Ash as well. It's the 3-tech and the 5-tch I'm wondering about. I really think this is where Wormley's injury puts us behind the 8-ball. He was physically developed enought to not redshirt last year which would give us another player with experience this year to play the 3 and/or the 5.

I would imagine that Black has the inside track at the 3, but I still think he's more suited for the 5 technique. And considering we only have, what, Heitzmann plus RS freshman at the 5 tech, we could really use Black there as well. Some young gun is going to have to step up this year to fill one or both of these roles. Unless the coaches want to roll with some Washington and Pipkins together, but you'd be sacrificing some quickness to have that interior.

It will be interesting. Good point on Ash, forgot about him.

We seem to have quite a few guys that aren't definitive 3- or 5-techs right now. Am I remembering correctly that last year Black ended up moving inside to 3-tech because of his quickness on passing downs?

I'm also not sure how thick Mattison & Hoke want their ideal everydown 3-tech. Is Wormley big enough to move inside yet?

  • You saw a lot of Washington and Campbell last year, I see no reason why we wouldn't see a lot of Pipkins and Washington together this year.

Black will probably see time on the inside on passing downs for sure, and the 5 tech in normal packages. I bet one of Strobel or Wormely wins a job somewhere along the line.

Most of the DL Michigan have recruited are very versatile it seems.

Honestly we will see what happens in spring, but I really think henry steps up at the 3 tech and adds a lot to the rotation. The good news is that we shouldnt be short on bodies. The bad news is thatntalent may still be a question. Actually we have talented guys....experience may be what we are missing, but with that many bodies, im sure someone will step up.

  • PeeWee slimmed down he steps up big time this year.

  • I think Pipkins step to the forefront like Hankins did in his second year... I think Pipkins has the same natural ability as Hankins and that could be a huge boost for this defense... Need a guy that can command a double and/or make teams pay for trying to block him one on one... Looking for a big year from him and hope all 3 frosh DL can RS... I really want to see who steps up at the SDE spot... Strobel and Clark are my 2 guesses... I think Mario locks up the WDE spot because his first step is so much better than any other player on this team.

    jnewberg24

  • I don't know about anyone else, but I'm extremely excited about how the OL will play this year, especially the RS frosh like Kalis.

  • DL will be the surprising strength of the defense IMO. i think all of the redshirt fresh will see significant time. I don't see black getting pt except in passing downs.
    1st/2nd down:
    Clark/Mario/taco, pipkins, wash, stroebel/wormley
3rd down would have black in for Washington.

Fwiw, certain insiders believe that Black will start at the 3-tech. Don't forget that he played very well in the bowl game.

Only because South Carolina passed so much. He is a liability in the run game.

I would be very very surprised if black didn't play a large role this year. Just my opinion though.

Disagree, i think Black sees more snaps on the dl then anyone else. He can be moved around alot like RVB was.

Guess we will see. It's no secret, the coaches had black starting at the 3 first game of the season and he was quickly replaced because the coaches felt he didn't stack up well against running teams. I don't see him at the 5 because you can face double teams with the tackle and TE and again his strength and size is not best there. He isn't that big of a guy like RVB, I think he is a player best for WDE but we have more talented and athletic guys there thus he is a player without a true position except rushing the passer on 3rd down. Tape doesn't lie.

  • Hmm I don't know about you guys but in my NCAA '13 several players had amazing offseasons, which led to a tremendous football season. I don't remember the exact stats but Derrick Green won the Doak Walker, Devin Gardner was 2nd in the Heisman, Taco had 14 sacks, Pipkins was unstoppable, and Dymonte broke Braxton Miller's leg. Shane Morris also got to play all of the 4th quarter against MSU.

Unless someone from Michigan beat out Gardner for the Heisman you need to practice more.biggrin

Yes, safety is the biggest question mark heading into next imo.

I expect James Ross and Boldin to take big steps this year. At minimum one of the two is going to be a beast next year.
