2013 Basketball commit Zak Irvin: Mr. Basketball?

  • Talks about the possibility of him being Mr. Basketball in Indiana. What really stands out to me is the coach mentioning that Irvin has just started to come into his own lately; another testament to Beilein's ability to find players as they're developing.

  • Really excited for next years team. Everyone seems to think once Burke and co. leave Michigan that we will go away. Little do they know that we are actually here to stay..

I won't be too optimistic if Hardaway, Burke, and GR3 leave. If one or two of them stay (no way Burke does but the others are a possibility), we shouldn't miss a beat. If they all leave, we'll still be good but we won't be this good.

Oh yeah, I definitely don't think we will be THIS good next year, but we'll still be contending for the B1G title iyam. Walton is a terrific PG, he will obviously be a step down from Burke but I don't think it will be a huge dropoff. According to a rivals premium article, it said many scouts believe Walton is on par with any other PG in his class. And Irvin is certainly a baller if he is up for the award of POTY in Indiana.

  • A player has to be a great talent (like Harris) to get Mr. Basketball in Indiana and not have declared to Indiana or Purdue. Not sure about now but there used to be a lot of politicing involved.

  • Irvin is going to be very interesting for next season. Incredible player and will probably be very good as a freshman, but it's going to be interesting to see where he fits into the starting lineup. Burke will be gone of course (Walton will likely replace him), but where will he fit in if GR3 and Hardaway both stay? That would give a potential starting lineup of Walton, Hardaway, Stauskas, GR3, and Morgan/McGary (assuming they stay with a smaller lineup).

It seems possible that Irvin could beat out Stauskas, but think about this: at some point next season Stauskas or Irvin could be coming off the bench, if both GR3 and Hardaway come back. Of course, things still have a lot of shaking out to do, especially with the draft and lineups for next year, but for a team that barely had capable bench players a couple of years ago, having a player like Irvin or Stauskas off the bench is just mind boggling. Whether people want to believe it or not, Beilein is building this team and program for the long-term.

That would be great but I don't see Hardaway and GRIII both returning. I think we have a higher chance of losing both than keeping both. Irvin is going to be terrific as a freshman so if one of them stays and Walton lives up to the hype we are going to be real good.

Very true about the politicking involved in Indiana for this award. This years SR class is pretty weak by Indiana standards and kids probably top 2/3 most talented SR's in it. Don't know if a JR has ever won the award, but the JR class is loaded and can easily think of at least 3 kids that would be better candidates.

Oh I agree, odds are pretty low that Michigan keeps both Hardaway and GR3, but I do really think GR3 will be back. He's already projected to go pretty high, but with another year, he could be one of the very top picks in the draft and get a huge boost. Not only will he be a better player, but he will also have the stats to back his reputation since Burke and others won't be eating up as many possessions. Either way, Michigan will have a good lineup for next season.

There has never been a repeat on the list of Indiana Mr. Bs so I don't think a junior has ever won the award...including Oscar Roberson, the Big Dog, Rick Mount and Jimmy Rail...sort of the Mt. Rushmore of Indiana High School basketball.
