2011-12 Michigan Hockey Thread "NCAA Tournament #1 Seed"

  • Michigan is off to a good start with a 6-1-1 record and a 2-1-1 CCHA record and are ranked #3 in the polls. They swept a good Ferris State team last weekend, and this weekend they get Western at Yost, who are currently ranked #4 in the USCHO poll. Freshman Phil Di Giuseppe is playing excellent and Merrill was just reinstated on the team for practices. GO BLUE!

  • Wish I could watch some of these games, doesn't seem like there's many streams for NCAA hockey until the Frozen Four.

  • With Merrill back in the lineup, this is one of the best teams in college hockey IMO. Great goaltending, solid scorers, and great defense. We definitely miss BORK, but we have a lot of really good players.

Di Guiseppe is going to be one hell of a player.

Same here, but I end up listening to the radio broadcasts. The first game I'll be able to watch is the game @ MSU on December 10 since it's on the BTN.

Agreed, I'm have been pleasantly surprised with how potent the offense has been so far. And yeah, Hunwick plays amazing for the tiny guy he is.

That's why I love the comparisons that our new goalie recruit (the name is slipping my mind and I feel awful, I should definitely know this) has had with Hunwick. They say he's supposed to be a not-as-tiny version of Hunwick. Which would be a beautiful thing. Add that with Nieves and Trouba, and that's an unbelievable class. Makes our football class look mediocre.

  • Also, I'm sure this thread will be used for all the games, and I just want to say to everyone who lives around Michigan or is a student there, even if you're not a hockey fan: Do yourself a favor and go to Yost. It is the most unbelievable experience. Probably the best place to watch a hockey game in America. If you've never gone before, make a thread asking for the chants, because you'll want to know them before you go.

But really. Go to Yost. Put it on your bucket list or whatever you have.

Jared Rutledge is the goalie that just committed recently. Seems from what I've seen that he's not interested in becoming the 3rd goalie to leave to the OHL before playing a game.

And it is awesome that Trouba, Nieves, and Giuseppe have all been recently projected as NHL 1st round draft picks in 2012.

  • Question for you guess. Do all B1G schools have a hockey team?

No, only Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State (CCHA teams), Minnesota, and Wisconsin (WCHA teams) have teams currently with Penn State being added in 2012-13. The Big Ten Hockey Conference will start in 2013-14, can't wait for coverage on the BTN.

Exactly. Question for anyone who knows: UNO is completely different, right? I know they have a hockey team, but they won't join the Big Ten? And is there no team for UNL?

As far as I know, yes UNO is completely different and will not be a part of the Big Ten Conference. It would be nice if schools like Nebraska-Lincoln and Illinois started teams. I believe I've heard that Illinois is not interested in creating varsity hockey there though.

  • I think Michigan a great shot at winning the CCHA again. miami is overrated (0-4-0 in the league) like I thought they were before the season started, and notre dame isn't the end-all be-all team everyone was saying before the season so far. There is a ton of hockey left to be played, but I think if Michigan doesn't win the league, they'll be in the top-3. I'm thinking Michigan does win A conference championship this year. Which one, is a good question (regular-season or tournament). Can't wait to see the weekend series against western to see where this team is at right now.

The game tomorrow night is on FSN-Detroit and Saturday night is on Comcast TV. Don't know if you live in Michigan or have comcast, but a decent chunk of conference games are televised this season. Comcast usually picks up a nice amount of games and then FSN/FSN+ picks up the rest and of course BTN gets the B1G games.

  • Sheesh, Miami is 0-4-0 in conference play right now? Brutal.

Grew up in Kalamazoo. I bleed green and white in every sport except hockey where I root for Western. Looking forward to this weekend's series. Hoping for a split but I'd be damn happy with a sweep. Never been to Yost. Heard it is a good time down there. Western has a solid team this year. Fast with some good puck handlers. The real question mark is the goal tending which has been solid so far. Should be a fun series.

I think a split is about as good as Western will get this weekend. Yost is a hostile place to play. Western is deep with their scoring though, and that may cause matchup problems for Michigan. Ultimately I think Michigan wins both and sweeps the weekend.

  • It's been covered, but yeah UNO has a hockey team and we don't. Kind of wish we did, I think I could really get into it.

I really don't expect to win either game. Yost is a tough place to play. But Western is playing pretty well and should have some confidence so I could see them taking 1 of 2. Hoping for a sweep to keep that 0 in the loss column toot. Should be a fun series regardless.

Side note: MSU player Branden Carney broke his neck at practice today. Sounds like he should be ok, but still, scary stuff.

We should petition for a college hockey board.

Dang, best of luck to him, his family and his teammates. That is definitely some scary stuff.

That's really scary. Does he have movement in his limbs and everything? Hate to see those kind of things.

Do you play hockey? I would love a college hockey board.

  • Dropping in from the Penn State board. I've been covering Penn State's transition from Club to NCAA hockey, complete with recruit articles and all that. I spoke with Zach Hyman when he was considering where to transfer(was committed to Princeton before Gadowsky left to coach PSU) kid looks to be a player, can anyone provide an update on how he has played so far? Covering NCAA hockey is going to be a blast, especially with all of the tradition of the Big Ten schools.

He's been playing pretty well. Great hands and excellent balance. He's probably the second best freshman IMO behind a stellar and possible super star in Phil DiGuiseppe. I think he's gonna be a great starter here.

So far on the season he's got 1-3-4 through 8 games.
