  • Looking at our schedule and hearing [the media's] concern about us filling the holes on the lines and doubting Denard's ability as a passer, I couldn't help but think of the Maize and Blue Pickaxes that Lloyd passed out to every member of the team and coaching staff that year. I would love to see Brady replicate this in his own way.

Adding to the challenges facing the 1997 team, Michigan entered the season with the toughest schedule among the 112 NCAA Division I-A schools based on records from the previous year. Days before the season opener, Lloyd Carr compared the daunting schedule to an expedition to Mount Everest. Carr noted, "It's a little akin to climbing Mount Everest. But Mount Everest has been climbed. And with great preparation and determination, and great attitude, which I think our players have, I can assure you we're looking forward to it."

Edit: I just found stories about Hoke passing out Maize and Blue Navy Seal's Tridents last year. I have no idea how I didn't know that until now.

  • I'll go even further back.

    1985.
We had just come off the worst season in Bo's career, at 6-6. Bo was pissed off at the seniors from the 84 team who seemed to play for themselves rather than for Michigan.

Harbaugh was coming off a season cut short by a broken arm.
Sophomore RB Jamie Morris would take over the starting role with Gerald White and Thomas Wilcher as the backups and Bob Perryman as the FB.
The line consisted of John Elliott, Mark Hammerstein, Bob Tabachino, and Clay Miller as the only experienced returning linemen. The rest were RS freshmen (John Vitale and Mike Husar) along with unproven upperclassmen (Jerry Quaerna, and Mike Krauss).
TE was solid with Eric Kattus
WR was a complete mystery with basketball convert Paul Jokisch, Erik Campbell, freshman John Kolesar, and inconsistent Gilvanni Johnson.

If the internet was around back in that day, there would be wide-spread panic regarding the offense. Thin on the line, tiny tailback, a QB coming off an injury, and zero optimism regarding the WR unit.

But thanks to a stifling defense and a re-focused coaching staff, that team went on to finish with Bo's highest ranking ever.....#2 in the nation after beating Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl.

I can see quite a few comparisons between this squad and the 85 team. Defense rules the day while the offense comes together and does its job.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

That is on the edge of my memories of Michigan football, Harbaugh and Morris. Just fragments, nothing really clear, a 9-10 year old kid falling in love with football.
