11/5/11 Michigan vs Iowa

  • I think Iowa will be the best offense Michigan has faced all season, and am still not convinced their defense can stop the Hawkeyes, especially at Kinnick.

    Notre Dame??

    Our defense has been able to make adjustments in every game this season and that should not stop tomorrow. If we lose tomorrow, I'll be surprised and pissed.

    For full disclosure, I cover recruiting for the Iowa site. Glad you guys finally got your own board, and I've really enjoyed interacting with a lot of you so far.

    Here's what I posted in the prediction thread on our site:

    I don't think either team is good enough on defense to run away with this game. Iowa could have a lot of trouble stopping Michigan. I honestly don't think they'll be able to do it, but if Iowa can shut down Michigan's running game and prevent big, broken plays by Denard Robinson, they have a shot to pull away.

    On the other side of the ball, I have a feeling Iowa's offense will be clicking tomorrow. I think Iowa will be the best offense Michigan has faced all season, and am still not convinced their defense can stop the Hawkeyes, especially at Kinnick.

    I'm thinking it'll come down to the final minute, and give Iowa the slight edge at home.

    31-30 Hawkeyes

    You make valid points, but I just can't see a team that lost to a TERRIBLE Minnesota team putting 31 points on Michigan. I very well might be wrong, but I just don't see it at this time.

    I'm not that high on Notre Dame's offense. I would say Iowa's offense is slightly better at just about every position group (QB, RB, WR, OL) than ND's is. ND obviously has Floyd, and he's a beast, but Marvin McNutt is a heck of a player as well.

    I'm not saying Iowa is a lock to win, far from it, but I do think Iowa has the best offense - when they're clicking - that Michigan has seen this year.

    You have to trust Denard to make those short throws consistently. An overthrow means an INT.

    Edit: I'm not saying Denard's going to go out and throw 3 picks, just that those short passes are touch throws.

    And Iowa will not bring much pressure. It's just not their style. They rarely, if ever, blitz, which is why I say they can be out-athleted, but not really out-schemed. They'll play disciplined football for 4 Qs.

    How are all short pass touch throws?

    No doubt that that was a horrible, unacceptable loss. Iowa's offense moved the ball up and down the field all day, though. They continually shot themselves in the foot in the red zone, though, making a turnover and missing two relatively easy field goals.

    Iowa's defense just isn't that good, and couldn't make crucial stops against Minnesota. Iowa could struggle defensively against Michigan, but their offense is good enough to move the ball and put some points up.

    ND = 429 ypg
    Iowa = 402 ypg

    I guess we'll agree to disagree on that one. Iowa might have the better QB, but ND has far superior talent at the other offensive positions IMO.

    I think it's tough to tell based on yardage, as they only have one common opponent thus far. FWIW, Iowa completely carved up Pitt's D in the last 20 minutes of the game the week before Notre Dame played them.

    Coker is a beast, and I don't think ND's backs are as good as him. Floyd is a heck of a receiver, but I think Iowa's top-3 of McNutt, Davis and Martin-Manley are a little better than ND's receivers overall. Up front, Riley Reiff is projected by some as a first-round pick in April. Iowa's RG (Gettis) and RT (Zusevics) are pretty good as well. And Vandenberg, IMO, definitely has the advantage at QB. I'm not saying Iowa is a lot better than ND offensively, but I do think they're better. Interested to see what happens tomorrow.

    Michigan's defense has been awfully opportunistic with turnovers this year, leading the nation in fumble recoveries I believe.

    That could be key tomorrow. For the most part, Iowa has done a decent job of taking care of the ball. As dangerous as Michigan's offense is, though, Iowa can't afford to make any turnovers.
