  • Wisconsin that high surprises me. Good for them. NW also seems a little low. You guys must be really happy with a 12 ranking.

For me, when people talk about academics as it relates to sports, I don't care what school rankings are. What really matters is how much the coaches emphasize academics. Rankings have little bearing on that, unless admissions standards are so high that you need to focus on it (e.g. Stanford).

  • Northwestern is way low. Indiana should be on the list just because of their business and medical schools, but reputation isn't always reality. ND is a case in point...They should be very high on the list as far as reputation but I know them well and the reality doesn't match up imo.

    I agree with you mostly.

Our coaches are really selling the "life after football" aspect of the program right now, so we seem to have the coaches emphasizing academics and these types of 'prestige' rankings are just a feather in the coach's caps when giving their sales pitch.

I know Michigan's reputation, both as a good school and it's alumni base networking, was a big factor for Derrick Green.

Yeah, the fact that these rankings are reputation-based change things a bit.

Case in point: Washington University in St. Louis - top 5 med school, top 20 law school, top 20 undergrad, yet not very well known even in the US. Name's not synonymous with the Ivies, despite it being ranked right up there.

Reputation-wise, it's ranked in the 81-90 category here.

This is university reputation among academia, including the whole breadth of a university, rather than just a snapshot of the undergrad experience like USNWR. They are also reputation among academics, not 'what does an average person not involved in higher education think of these schools".

USNWR rankings are like measuring Michigan's athletic department based on just the swimming teams. They are great, but it totally leaves out all the other programs Michigan is a powerhouse that bring in huge dollars for the university.

The omission of ND is accurate from a graduate level sciences perspective. They don't do much research relative to the schools on this list; most of their grad level work is arts: law, business, history, religion, etc. (although those are all great programs).

If you look at the federal gov't website that lists research expenditures for universities, I bet you will see quite a bit of correlation between these rankings and total research.

I feel like WUSTL's reputation is probably hampered by how silly its name is. If they had named it after one of the founders of the school ("Eliot University" or "Greenleaf University," thanks Wikipedia) or if it had any name that didn't force it to constantly clarify that its not UW or GW, I feel like it would have heaps of extra prestige.

Great school though, beautiful campus, really wanted to go for undergrad but they waitlisted me upset
