It's absolutely beautiful, but the only school I could see fitting into the community there would be a very small liberal arts school with a high emphasis on quality education - like Skidmore in Saratoga Springs. Any state school or larger institution wouldn't fit in with the town at all.

You don't think a school like Cornell would fit in there? I thought Ithaca was almost identical to Lake Placid when I went.

Sorry I didn't specify when I said major, but I meant a good academic institution rather than just size wise.

The only problem with living in New York is that you have to live in NYC or one of the major western cities to have a big business.

I want to go out west at some point for fly fishing and skiing.

    Do you ski or fish?

I haven't gone skiing in years, but plan on doing some this season. There's a ski resort about 40 minutes West of me. And I want to learn to fly fish, as there's good trout fishing out this way.

I do like to hike and backpack, and there's plenty of opportunities to do so out here. I'm also going to a couple University recreation clinics on mountaineering skills so I can sometime down the way climb some of the high peaks out here (Grand Teton and Gannett Peak).

Ski season should be starting up out west soon, right? You guys are so lucky with the snow fall out there, I practically ski on ice all year, 2 inches of powder is a rarity.

If you want any advice on fly fishing, just ask and I can probably help out, with the exception of fly tying. If you do start to fly fish, I suggest joining Trout Unlimited.

Hiking is awesome too, I wish I would have picked it up earlier because I would have finished all the high peaks in the Adirondack area. Are you going to try and hike all the high peaks in America?

I think the size of Cornell would overwhelm the place a bit. My feeling from Lake Placid was that it was definitely geared to an older crowd than Ithaca. Ithaca is a very young town - two colleges, lots of opportunity downtown, the Commons is a very youth-oriented district, etc. Lake Placid, on the other hand, is a very picturesque vacation town, thanks to the Miracle on Ice it's a Mecca of sorts for many older hockey fans, and the nature of the town seems more geared towards an older demographic.

Of course, this is just the feeling I got from the town, but that's why I only think a smaller school would work. Ithaca's culture is dominated by students and education, and I think such an emphasis would clash considerably with Lake Placid's culture.

I agree with that, but I'm sure if there was a college there, that culture would change.

It should be starting soon. We've had two snowfalls so far, but I don't know how much the Snowy's has had.

And yeah, I'd like to do a lot of the peaks around here, and there are plenty. Colorado has a lot of 14'ers and Wyoming has a lot of 13'ers, and Montana has some good peaks up there as well. I'd eventually (years down the road) like to ascend Denali. There are lots of peaks that can be ascended, though, without mountaineering experience in the area.

The whole fucking site is littered with ignorant, and in a lot of instances, arrogant bullshit. The thing that stands out to me the most is the hypocrisy. Damn near every thread is littered with criticisms of every other team and its fans, yet it's reflective of their entire miserable existence.

This is why the only time I venture in there is when someone here links to a particularly memorable moment of stupidity.
