Saint Clairsville (OH) 2014 LB/TE Michael Ferns is self-motivated on & off the field. ND, Virginia & Wake Forest have offered the young man who learned to read at age two.

  • What's so amazing about that?.??? My daughter is just an average 20 year old ran that ran her 8th half marathon and had an ACT score of 29. I don't get all the boasting about D-I athletes with average scores...and I hear it for scores of 17 or 19. Hell, 22 is average to good... certainly Not great!! Perhaps the author of this story and many others simply have low expectations!

  • Have to go ahead and say how he doesn't have to change much in helmets. Kind of a required recognition.

These are insane tackling numbers that few put up. Hate it that he is being brainwashed constantly to PSU. Obviously, O'Brien has no problem continuing to drop names no matter how far away he may be from actually being the one who made players such as Aaron Hernandez who they are today.

And yet, people get upset when UFM drops a couple. lol

The closest that I will ever get to a Buckeye ring or Gold Pants. Saw it sold on e-bay April 29, 2011 for $8500.

  • I think the "amazing" portion of this young man's off the field history, is more in the fact that he has a 4.19 GPA and his obvious eagerness to learn. Holding such a high GPA requires a student to take AP courses. For a student to maintain that GPA while playing a sport (especially one as time demanding as football) and doing so with the distractions of all this attention he is getting in recruiting, I'd say that is pretty amazing. I can see why you you would no be very impressed with the ACT score, but that's just one test. I know numerous individuals who scored in the 30's on the ACT who couldn't maintain a GPA even close to his. This kid sounds like great role model and sounds like somebody who leads by example. As a Buckeye fan, I would love it if he became a Buckeye...even with an ACT score of 22 lol

I'm gong to lay out the football schedule for the next 5 years, show me one, just one game Ohio State fans would find acceptable to lose.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but he got a 22 on the ACT as a Sophomore. So he probably will beat your daughters 29 next Spring.

  • I think it's great when any student excels in the class room. I have spoken to teachers who the kids are doing very well at testing because that's the norm with all the AP courses and PSAT's. The problem they face is practical application, because they are allowed to use Calculators these days, where in the past you couldn't. It's all good because the truly intelligent kids rise to the occassion when it counts. By the way...if any kid can pass the ACT with a 22 or higher and they are a junior there are NROTC scholarships available. They also must do other positive things like civic activities.

  • Is your daugher 6ft 3"? 230 lbs. If so, then maybe we can offer her a scholarship!
Oh! She has to run like a cheetah. Have to out distance a deer, don't ya know!
Glad your daughter got a 29. I know your proud of her.

  • 22 on the ACT even as a sophomore is nothing to write home about. Further, if you look at the statistics on the test administrator's website and Kaplan's website, you'll see that the improvement between one's sophomore & senior year in scores above 18 rarely breaks 5 points; in other words, you're not likely to go from a 22 to a 34.

And iirc, wasn't the cutoff for NROTC scholarships 28?

That's what I was thinking...he still has a couple years to improve on that 22. I scored a 26 the first time I took the test my junior year in HS, and thought that was good enough, so never took it again. In contrast, this kid will probably take it again and again considering his work ethic.

This kind of work ethic is exactly what makes monsters like John Simon.

  • Not to be a d*%k, but why is the author acting like this kid is Stephen Hawking? 22?!?!...congrats, he barely qualifies! The test is not really one that differentiates between when you are in the 8th grade, or when you are a Senior. You either know the concepts, or you don't. I hope he raises his score because a 22 shows that he is literate. He started reading 2 years earlier than the "average" kid...wow! He has a 4.19 GPA on a 4.0 scale, but when you take AP classes, your GPA is really out of 5.0, so his 4.19 is really not impressive. Good for him that he is 6'3" 230, because his parents would be coming out of pocket hardcore for his education otherwise...

I am sure he is a stud football player, but that is what he is. Don't try to make it sound like he is some sort of genius because he has average/above-average scores, etc.
