Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech four-star offensive lineman David Dawson talked with 247Sports about how his commitment to Michigan unfolded on Saturday. He was one of six prospects to give a verbal to the Wolverines, including his four-star teammate, cornerback Jourdan Lewis.
I arrived at Michigan and I really didn’t know what was going to happen.
I talked to my mom about if Michigan offered me, would I commit on the spot. She was okay with it. She liked it for the academics, and the academics came before the football.
We were talking to Coach Hoke and he offered me. I looked at my mom and then looked at him and I told him I’d like to commit. He asked me if I was serious, and he jumped up and started yelling. He shook my hand and gave my mom a hug, gave me a hug. Everyone was screaming and it didn’t make it any better when J (Jourdan Lewis) walked in and said he was committing too. It was a great feeling yesterday.
I liked the coaches. They made me feel like I was at home. It wasn’t my first time going up there so I kind of new the place. The coaches really made me feel at home the way they interacted with the players and each other. It all played a big part in it.
Coach Funk said we’d talk more about what position I would play down the road, but he said they’ll try me out at tackle and see how it works. If it doesn’t work, he said we’ll move me to guard. I don’t care where I play whether it’s tackle, guard or center. Just whatever gets me on the field.
I look forward to working with Shane (Morris) and the offense. They say they’re going to a pro-style offense, and I’m looking forward to that. I’m looking forward to blocking for Shane and hopefully winning National Championships.
I grew up watching Michigan. You one day hope you can play there. And to be able to play with the kids I played with the last couple years makes it even better. Hopefully we can go out there and make history.
