On Wednesday, Michigan extended an offer out west to one of the top prospects in California for the 2014 class- Joe Mixon from Freedom high school in Oakley, California.
Michigan tight ends coach Dan Ferrigno, who is in charge of Mixon’s recruitment, gave him the good news.
“Coach Ferringo called me last week and said that he wanted to offer me after seeing my highlights,” Mixon said. “He told me that he just had to double check with coach (Fred) Jackson to make sure everything was good. When coach Ferringo called me today and told me I was just really excited. We talked about the tradition at Michigan and the stadium and stuff.”
Michigan joins Oregon State, California, Colorado, Arizona State, and Washington on Mixon’s offer list.
Does the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Mixon plan on visiting Ann Arbor in the near future?
“I definitely want to visit if I can,” said Mixon. “Coach Ferringo said that an official visit to Michigan would always be available though. Michigan is a great school and I watched them a lot when I was younger. This offer really excites me.”
Mixon plans on attending junior days at Washington, Nebraska, and Arizona State this off-season.
One program that could be close to offering Mixon next is UCLA.
“Their coach is coming to see me tomorrow I think,” said Mixon. “They have been talking to me a lot. I think they might offer next so we’ll see.”
Other programs that have been recruiting Mixon are Boise State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Miami, and USC.
Right now Mixon is open to any school and does not have a timetable for a decision.
This season, Mixon rushed for over 1,500 yards and accounted for 30 total touchdowns. He reports a 4.5 forty-yard dash.
